In the First World War people wanted the young men to go to war, but no-one really knew about conditions of the fighting in the war. Wilfred Owen was one of the people who wanted to tell the public what war was really was like. He tried to do that through his poetry.

The Ugliness of War in Wilfred Owen's Dulce et Decorum est Wilfred Owen's "Dulce et Decorum est" is seen as a strong expression of the ugliness of war, and "an attack on the idea of war being glorious" (Kerr 48). It transmits an irritating clip, with full animation and in vivid colors, of embittered and battered soldiers marching to their death.

The Ministry of Information’s Official War Artists Scheme was set up in 1916. In 1917 the Imperial War Museum was set up to commemorate the conflict. Part of its remit was to collect and commission art. Some of the following paintings were ‘official’, others were created by the artists to express their response to events.
